TO BE

Directed by McLean Fletcher and James Lee

Screenplay by McLean Fletcher

A woman briefly considers drastic measures to escape the monotony of her mundane life.

Using the entire text of William Shakespeare’s famous “To be or not to be” speech, filmmaker McLean Fletcher’s short film “To Be” brilliantly adapts the context of the plot to make both the heightened language and subject of Hamlet’s contemplation more accessible to a modern audience.

This arthouse psychological drama weaves the poetry of contemporary iambic pentameter with striking visuals, imagining an unseen moment of epiphany before Ophelia's watery death.

The film is both a stand alone short, as well as a proof of concept teaser for a feature film of the same name.

Written in the rhythmic poetry of Shakespearean verse, The Girl Who Drowns (feature) tells the introspective story of an actress playing the role of Ophelia in a modern production of Hamlet. Parallel stories mirror the actress's journey with that of the character Ophelia as she discovers a paradox that challenges her very existence, creating a feature film experience that promises to both test and seduce its audiences.

SCRIPT WORKSHOP TESTIMONIALS:

McLean Fletcher has the eyes for the written language and the ears for the spoken word. She workshopped my play and had positive observations of the work. She gave an insightful critique of areas that needed to be expanded and the writing that should be cut. I took all of McLean’s advice and my play is stronger, tighter, better.

No matter how close your work is to “ready”, McLean will give you the positive feedback you need to keep you moving forward and the gentle push that makes you see the “darlings” that need to go.

She has the ability to give you a fresh view of your work so that you pare it down to the essence you wanted when you started the writing journey.

McLean sees the big picture of the work in front of her, but she doesn’t miss the details. She has the rare ability to help you improve both by making clear suggestions that are easy to manage.

Often in writing, some pieces of a work need to be brought out more fully, while other parts need to be pared down or eliminated. McLean has the eye and the ear for both and the clarity of communication to make your work better, much better.

McLean has a beautiful heart, and a wonderful soul. She shares these with you when she works with you. She gave me and my play kindness and a chance. I am forever grateful, and my play is much better.
