Acrylic on canvas paper*, 92cm x 92cm

Another exploration with surrealism, this artwork shows Spirit and Soul as one, growing through faith together. Two hands are shown, one pushing a figure off a cliff, and the other catching it. The figure has no hands, because they themselves are one with the larger hands.

We may not know how to do something when we embark upon it, or when it is thrust upon us, but the person we become along the way will catch us if we have faith. The threatening black tree is a nod to Exorcism of Doubt, the black tar of fear will always be present, but we must persist. The paradox of faith; you can’t be brave if you aren’t afraid.

Lauryn Hill sang “everything is everything” and I have chosen to use circles, a favorite shape in my artwork, to demonstrate that everything is connected. The divine world, even God itself, is one with the natural world, and you and I. The roses from my artwork Becoming, return to acknowledge the beauty of growth.

The creator is the creation, which is paralleled in the painting itself. Paradoxically, I am both the creator of the artwork, and was created while I painted it. This painting saw me through a fearful transition from the life I knew in America to a new life in Australia.

Painted in 2023.
