Ego Death, 56cm x 56cm
Acrylic on canvas paper*, 56cm tall by 56cm wide.
The second painting in my soul series, which I refer to as the Hero’s Journey collection, depicts a necessary decapitation of my ego from my body. The concept was first painted in 2019 the same day as Exorcism of Doubt but took much more time to finish, I completed it in 2021. The allegory is not lost on me.
My beauty, youth, and talent, which I used as currency for much of my life, began to suffocate me. I became a slave to my small self. In order to see the true me, the Large Self, I began the lifelong practice of detaching from my body and personality in order to discover the divine within.
In Christianity this is called kenosis, or emptying of oneself. In Buddhism, anatta is the belief that human beings have no permanent personal self or soul. In learning to detach oneself from the persona, or ego, one learns to find freedom from suffering.
